The first 5 days of riding in the West coast of Taiwan can be summerised into these words: Rain, rain and more rain! All the way from 新竹 to 墾丁!
There is not one day that it did not rain. It rained from the moment we left Taipei and continued until we reached the Southern tip of 墾丁. Soaking wet everyday. Luckily, I did prepare myself for this with Ortlieb waterproof bags. Tried and tested … really waterproof!
On hindsight, rain is not that bad afterall. It reduces the heat that we were suppose to be expose under. The cooler tempreture did help to conserve some energy when riding.
After a certain point, we just give up on rain prevention gear. It is going to get wet anyway, no point trying to put on any water proof or rain gear. I guess I was lucky, I wore sandles rather than shoes. So it does not matter if it is wet or dry.
In the beginning, we stop at shelters when the rain gets heavy. After a while, it would appear that the rain was here to stay. Shelter or no shelter, ride on!
It does get cold after a while and Patty came up with the homeless apporach to keeping warm. That is to stuff newpaper underneath your shirts. It helps to trap heat and keep you warm. And it did in the beginning but later even the newspaper got wet.
Do you know that a bowl of piping hot instant noodles during a rainy day is such a wonderful thing. Never had instant noodles tasted so damn good!
7-11 is basically our saviour through out the entire trip. What would I do without you?!? It is a place for toilet breaks. A place to replanish your fluids. A place to satisfy your hunger. A place that offers cool shade away from the sun. A place to shelter you from rain … many many more.
So enjoy our “Rain" photo series (Not that Korean pop star la), 500km of crappy wet weather!
